Each week, Marketplace Monday profiles one great add-on available in the Atlassian Marketplace–where you can try and buy more than a thousand add-ons for Atlassian products.

In a world of time-based dependencies between issues and releases, including Gantt charts right inside JIRA can be tremendously helpful. With the Gantt-Chart Add-on for JIRA, you can get an overview of your dependencies to better allocate resources. Gantt charts are a well-known instrument for classic project management, but can be used by agile project teams embedded within a traditional company, too.

Gantt-Chart Add-on is for

  • Executives to get a overview of high-level dependencies, with features like PowerPoint export to automatically generate your Gantt charts from JIRA as native PowerPoint elements.
  • Product Owners to plan sprints and releases on a high-level basis together.
  • Project Managers to track timing and dependencies between issues as well as allocate resources on individual projects or within a multi-project environment.
  • Test Coordinators to define and track inter-project dependencies and link versions to test issues.
  • Release Managers to define and track versions as well as their dependencies via linking versions.
  • Resource/Line Managers (e.g. matrix organization) to schedule tasks, assign them to employees and get a top-down overview of the related team and their capacity utilization.

How it works

An issue needs to have a planned start and end date to be put on the timeline of a Gantt chart. This information is stored within two custom fields that the plugin creates. Within a Gantt bar, the issue’s progress is displayed as a green bar growing from left to right representing the progress in percent as sum of logged work versus estimated effort. Opposite this, the capacity utilization is growing from bottom to top representing the percentage of estimated effort versus duration of the issue determined by planned start and end date in working days.

If this all sounds like a lot of work to set up, don’t fear. If you enable automatic rescheduling, the planning dates will be generated based on the data provided when the issue is created or updated. On the Gantt chart, issues can be moved–their planned start date or end date can be shifted via drag and drop. Dependent issues as well as sub-issues are rescheduled by keeping their current duration in working days. Explicit finish-start dependencies between sub-issues are unnecessary because of an intelligent rescheduling based on relative distances to the parent issue in working days. All of this saves you time as a user.

Using JIRA with Greenhopper, all configured non-working days are automatically handled. Version hierarchies are displayed, and if a version has its own start and end date entered from Greenhopper, these can be linked to other versions or issues interactively on the Gantt chart.

Non-working days can be configured globally and specific to projects; conversely, extra work days can be entered. (if your team works weekends). A Resource View is a collapsed Gantt-Chart with additional information grouped by assignee. To get a fast overview, all related issues are displayed as thin bars within a single row.

You can also add Gantt gadgets to your JIRA dashboard: any project or filter can be configured as a data source in Gantt Chart or Resource View. Using the flexibility of JIRA filters, multi-project aspects can be handled easily: you configure which issues you want to see. For specific projects, Gantt-Chart and Resource View are available as additional project tab panels, automatically displaying the issues of the project.

Integration into JIRA’s Issue Navigator makes it even more flexible: just add the new custom field “Gantt Chart” as an additional column and a related Gantt chart is drawn. Other columns can be configured or sorted using JIRA’s standard features.

Export natively to Microsoft Powerpoint for a great management presentation. Every element can be modified, highlighted or colored to focus on the related business aspect. It’s so easy to embed a Gantt chart into a larger presentation without trying to embed an image or PDF. Auto-scaling ensures that the whole timeline (daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly view) fits on your slide.

What’s coming

Individual non-working days e.g. from Team Calendar or Tempo will be collected on a personal calendar. This is the basis for enhanced rescheduling with respect to an issue’s assignee: the next larger step of resource management.

The X Factor

Gantt-Chart Add-on is highly integrated into JIRA: it uses JIRA’s native flexibility on individual dashboards, project tab panels and JIRA Issue Navigator (searching) wherever possible. Efficient multi-project handling is a key factor for daily business. Behind the scene, powerful algorithms make maintaining planning data with automatic rescheduling take less effort.

You can now get great add-ons like JIRA Gantt-Chart Plugin straight from the Universal Plugin Manager, which is available in JIRA, Confluence, and our developer tools. If you’re running UPM 1.6 or later, just check the plugin manager to update to the latest version. Otherwise, download it manually from the Atlassian MarketplaceRead more about the awesome updates the Atlassian Ecosystem team is bringing to the add-on experience!
