The Tip of the Month, brought to you by Atlassian University, is a monthly series aimed to help you master Atlassian’s tools. Products are more fun to use when you know all the tricks.

If you spend a lot of time in JIRA, take a moment to check out all the personal settings available. It might save you a click or two every time you use JIRA, prevent you from missing important updates, or even keep unnecessary emails out of your inbox!

I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about JIRA, but I just went through these and found a couple of things I wanted to change! Here’s what you’ll want to configure.

Your Home

Your JIRA home page is the JIRA page you are presented with immediately after you log in. You can configure the following JIRA pages as your JIRA home page:

  • The Dashboard
  • The Issue Navigator
  • Agile (GreenHopper)

Simply click the link in the drop-down arrow next to your name.

Get to know what’s new

Curious about the latest and greatest features? Saw a pop-up weeks or months ago, but you were too busy at the time to check it out?

You can get access to short videos showing off the new features by clicking ‘What’s New’.

Profile Settings

There are lots of options in here, like time zone, language, and email format, but the key settings you’ll want to get just right are:

  • Whether you want email notifications of your own changes
  • When you create a Filter or Dashboard, you may want it to be Shared by default.
  • Autowatch: issues that you create or comment on will automatically be watched for future changes.

Recent Activity

Sometimes I come in Monday morning and can’t remember what I did the week before. Jump over to your profile page and see a stream of your own recent activity. You can also see a count of the open issues assigned to you, broken down by project.

This also comes in handy when you need to remember what someone else was working on. Click on any username, and you’ll see their recent activity and assigned issue count per project.

Go Update your Settings Now

It will take just a moment, and if someone like me can find something worth changing (I just enabled Sharing by default) you’re bound to find one or two things you’ll want to update!

Did you discover a setting you didn’t know about? Post a comment below.
