The San Francisco homeless population is one of the highest in the country, and perhaps the most visible. When I first moved here, I would walk by an encampment, or someone sleeping on the street, and my heart would bleed for them. But after walking by enough people, every single day, that sadness turned into anger, and eventually into something worse: apathy.

Our education system hasn't really caught up to the break-neck speed of the technological changes we are experiencing. But as a technology company, we are literally bursting with computer science talent. I started to wonder what it would be like to bring the knowledge that we have to schools and teach kids the basics of computer science skills.

When the call to action came to join the Pledge 1% Initiative, the e-Core leadership team realized that this was more than just a chance to do good in our communities, but also an opportunity to inspire our teams to do good together. Our first project started with a small community center, Casinha, or "little house", for children in the impoverished area outside of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Since e-Core's largest office and main service delivery center is located in downtown Porto Alegre, it made sense for us to start there. During our first visit to the center we noticed they had a lot of great computer equipment that hadn't been set up or used yet.
