JIRA4_blog.pngAfter over 13 months of development, 4 months of beta and nearly 1000 resolved JIRA issues, the biggest release in Atlassian history is finally here: JIRA 4 is now available!

What's new?

JIRA 4 introduces countless new features including a fresh new UI, completely overhauled dashboards with OpenSocial gadgets and JQL -- which is, simply put, the best way to search in an issue tracker.

Best of all, every feature of JIRA 4 and GreenHopper 4 is now available to every user with new user-based licensing starting at $10 each for 10 users. No more Standard and Professional editions, every download of JIRA 4 has Enterprise functionality. You can learn more about the new user-based JIRA pricing here.

Back to the features, let me provide a bit more detail on the new stuff (if you are a visual learner, you can also watch the JIRA 4 video below):

  • Smart UI - A complete UI refresh introduces a slick new look and feel. Improved navigation with new quick create links in the header and project browser that remember what type of issue you created last. The improved issue browser also let's you take common actions directly from the search results.

  • Activity streams - View recent activity for any issue, project or user. Create custom activity streams for your JIRA dashboard or subscribe to them via RSS.

  • JIRA 4 - Activity stream.png
  • JIRA Query Language - JQL is a powerful new advanced search that makes it simple for anyone to create complex (and actually useful) searches. Add these directly to gadgets for your dashboard or setup email notifications to stay up-to-date.
  • JIRA 4 - Complex JQL (crop).png
  • New dashboards - Shareable dashboards are nothing new, but now you can drag-and-drop gadgets into a variety of flexible layout templates. Browse the gadget directory for gadgets and customise colors, settings and much more.

  • OpenSocial Gadgets - Because most Atlassian products now produce OpenSocial gadgets and the new JIRA dashboards are implemented as an OpenSocial container, you can combine data from JIRA, Confluence, FishEye and even popular consumer apps like Remember the Milk in one place. You can even add it to you Gmail or iGoogle page too!

There's tons more in JIRA 4. Check out the release notes for all the details or stay tuned to the JIRA Product Blog where we'll continue to tell you more about the new features in the days to come.

But wait, there's more.. GreenHopper 4!

A new version of GreenHopper is also now available providing agile project management for JIRA. GreenHopper 4 adds support for kanban as well as many other new features and UI improvements. FishEye - Task Board - Cards Kanban View.png

Great video :-)

But could you please get rid of the background music - it makes it very difficult to hear and understand what is being said - at least for those of us, where English is not our first language.

Sounds great!

http://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/tour/issue-tracking.jsp advertises "Connect JIRA issues directly to source code with [...] plugins to [...] Bazaar"

Following the given link to https://plugins.atlassian.com/search/category/57 and/or searching there doesn't discover any bazaar plugin.

Where is the Bazaar plugin?

By Peter at October 7, 2009 2:43 AM

Hi Peter,

Unfortunately, we've had a few delays getting the Bazaar plugin on the Atlassian Plugin Exchange. We'll get it added as soon as possible.

It's an open source project, so in the meantime you can access it here: https://launchpad.net/bzr-jira

Hope this helps,
Ken

Hi Ejner,

Thanks for the feedback. We are updated the video with better volume. I hope that helps.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi there
does this includes timesheet capabilities?

By Stan at October 14, 2009 2:35 PM

Hi Stan,

There are a handful of effective time tracking plugins on the Atlassian Plugin Exchange.

I recommend checking out if any of these meet your needs.

Thanks,
Ken

Looks great. Is this available in JIRA Studio yet? If not, any word on an ETA?

Thanks,
Eric

By Eric Marthinsen at October 18, 2009 1:50 AM

Hi Eric,

JIRA Studio is not yet on JIRA 4, but we are working hard to get all of the existing instances upgraded as quickly as possible. Once JIRA Studio 2.0 is released, all new environments will include JIRA 4.

Hope this helps. Thanks,
Ken
