In 2006, we created a free, "personal" license for Confluence for collaborating with your friends and peers. It has been a big hit. Over 17,000 people have generated a personal Confluence license to date. WOW.

Over the years, several customers had asked for a JIRA personal edition, too. The wait is almost over.

JIRA 3.13 will be released in a week and with it there will be an optional 3-person personal license version. Keep an eye on this blog for details coming soon! In the meantime, you can enjoy an archived blog post about one customer that was started using JIRA for his hobbies a while ago.

*** UPDATE 9 September, 2008 ***
The new JIRA personal license page is live.

If we download the standard edition today and use the trial license, can we just switch it over in a week to use the personal license? I can't wait that long! Having JIRA withdrawls....

Thanks for offering Jira free for personal use! I use the tool at a client's site for professional development, and would love to use it for my personal task tracking as well. Any chance Confluence license will be extended from two to three users as well? That would make a lot of difference for our family's use of this tool.

Jira free for personal use? so can I use the tool at the client's site? what is the time frame limitation to use it ?

@esbium: Doing some research, I'll be back with an answer shortly.

@Lina: Personal JIRA is for non-commercial use. Using it at a client site would not be considered "personal," I'm afraid.

@Mark M: No immediate plans to change Confluence Personal to 3 users.

This is fabulous news! I am eager to integrate a personal copy of JIRA into my hobby project workflow via Eclipse Mylyn.

@esbium: Yes, you can switch to a Personal License at any time by simply installing the license.

Jeff, Thanks for posting the answer back, can't wait!

@Jeff: No immediate plans to change Confluence Personal to 3 users --- what a pitty! I use my personal licence since a couple of years and it is a pitty that my family members cannot use it as I do. Ok, they can use my login, but then again I cannot trace changes they made. I think it would be a good idea to reconsider a family product!!! 2 users is just TOO FEW!

based on what I see, the personal license is not free. How can i get it free?

Hi Angeline,

Download a copy of JIRA (any edition) and then generate a personal license by clicking the link here http://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/personal.jsp
