JavaBlogs is the java.net news source / 2003 Jun 11

OK, so I may be biased, but this is why I love java.blogs.

The Java world is abuzz with the news of the new java.net site that was launched today.

Except... it wasn't launched. It's not even linked on java.sun.com as I write this. However all you need to do is look at "today's posts" to see tens of posts and insights into java.net, what it is and what it could mean. Why read one persons view point when you can read 20's and make up your own mind?

Now - who's going to join me in convincing all the java.net bloggers to get their blogs onto javablogs?

Comments

You might need to put together a "Switch"-type commercial. I figure the script might go something like (ala Ellen Feiss' ad). You could imagine this might work better if java.net had come first. But play along :)

Mike: So I'm reading up on the 2003 JavaOne conference on java.net and the computer is all 'buzzz burrrrrp whrrrrrrrl grrrrrrrrr'.
Mike: And then the applications throws a NullPointerException.
Mike: I'm all, "Hrmph?"
Mike: That could've been a really good post, but I'll never know.
Mike: So I decided to write my own group aggregation site for blogs related to Java.
Mike: It uses a wicked set of open source components like WebWork and Lucene.
Mike: You can see newly added blogs, filter blog entries through the calendar, and get daily updates by e-mail.

(flash the java.blogs logo)

Mike: My name's Mike and I'm a java.blogger.

I already did and you know that ;) The only question is whether SUN wants to tie with Altassian but considering that they have tied with CollabNet and Oreilly I dont see a problem. You are probably better off asking some like simon or alan to write/talk about it. These guys are @ SUN One and can directly address the question to folks @ SUN.

My 2 cents

The O'Reilly blogs do have RSS feeds, per blog (RSS 0.91). I suppose it's up to them to set them to feed into java.blogs.

It'd also be cool if java.blogs could get picked up by Meekat (if that's not happening already).

JavaBlogs is great (Even greater when I realized my login problems were due to uppercase login names and password which are stored lowercase in the database or something like that).

Great. And I had a discussion with an editor from TheRegister who wrote "blog content is crap" and I said JavaBlogs is the number one java information source about tools, experiences and opinons for me.

Merkat has had some problem sin the past.. seems better now but I do remember a time when the formats did or were nto valid rss feeds..

I found java.net last nite when searchign for info on Sun's new wireless direction..

I coudl not figure out why whois was showing a reocrd and www.java.net did not work so then I typed java.net and posted the first impressions about java.net to my blog las tnight..

at the moment I wish the ful blogs at java.net would have the same set of ful rss feeds one for site as a whole and rss feeds for indiviual blogs..sort of the same model that sun uses for the java.sun.com site

But due the stuff I ofudn in terms of particpation of java.net.. Istay with Javablogs.com, freeroller.net and javalobby.com..

Mike, you make some excellent comments and I agree with you. I have been talking to lots of people and haven't had time to blog my thoughts. I will do so on the plane ride home tomorrow.

The thing that strikes me is the ".net" url. If indeed it is a community site, then why not ".org". Why put into the mix the fact we are saying .NET. There is a funny oops-me-dear episode that happenned on the radio with this, that I shall blog later on this morning.
