AJUG, JavaBlogs and cell phone porn / 2003 Jul 31

What the? :)

The presentation at AJUG last night seemed to go quite well. I gave the same presentation on the technologies behind JavaBlogs that I gave at The Server Side Symposium in Boston. For those who want to download the presentations, see this blog post.

AJUG seemed to be picking up since the last time I attended. There were only 15-20 people there, but there were some genuinely smart questions and the discussions were interesting. Hopefully this is a good sign for the future of what could be a very valuable tool for Australian Java developers.

There's a lot of valuable discussion about JavaBlogs going on at the moment - it's fantastic. I must admit that I had read Clay's interesting article on group dynamics but I didn't immediately think of JavaBlogs! We'll see what we can do to improve things, and perhaps put some better algorithmic sorting of best posts behind the whole thing. Charles - why not drop around to the office for a beer one night next week and we can chat about it?

As another point of interest, I got a new Sony-Ericsson T610 phone yesterday - very sexy. It has built in Bluetooth so of course I immediately went and downloaded the Salling Clicker and started controlling iTunes with it. My entire PowerPoint presentation last night was controlled via Bluetooth from my mobile phone, which meant I didn't have to huddle over the laptop the entire time - nifty!

The other cool feature of the T610 is that it has a camera. Now I'm not the sort of person to send out PXT (picture) messages @ $0.70 a pop. I can't really imagine anyone using this frequently at that price point - with the exception of drunk people in bars, and it would seem people engaging in new amorous activities that these sort of phones make available. Sadly as a single man, this second use is not so useful to me at the moment. Still, as a geek, the Bluetooth is bloody cool.

Comments

I was going to go to the talk last night and heckle, but work intervened at the last minute. The beer sounds like a good idea, though.
