Two is a Crowd - Java SSO & identity management / 2006 Sep 07

Just a short note (as a lot of people have been asking about it) - I can publicly announce today that we've acquired Authentisoft.

For more details, read the full blog entry and press release on the Atlassian Blog.

I'm stoked to have Justen Stepka (who I've known as think as long as anyone in the Java community) joining us as the lead for the new product...

... which, as my internal naming guru didn't like the unimaginative IDX, will be called Atlassian Crowd.

What does it do? Single sign on for Java and J2EE applications, authentication, authorisation, identity management and application provisioning.

Or to simplify - seamless logins across JIRA and Confluence, as well as other enterprise applications we find indispensible like SVN, Fisheye and Jive's Forums and Wildfire. Crowd also supports bespoke, internal J2EE applications with simple developer libraries.

For me simple Java SSO has always been a goal and obviously that's one of the first areas Crowd will be concentrating on. Phase 1 if you like.

IDX is a great product, but it doesn't quite fit us out of the box so right now, we know we have a lot of work to do Atlassianising it. Simplifying the installation, making it easier to use, becoming more friendly with all sorts of other applications and adding extensibility via plugins - all supported by legendary service and no-bullshit sales.

Most important of all, it won't be expensive like other enterprise software. Crystal clear, affordable, up front pricing, no discounts, no unsupported licensees, 50% off for academia, free for non-profits, Open Source and communities.

An alpha will be out very soon and you'll see quite rapid iterations as the new Justen & Justin team get cranking.

As Big Kev says, I'm excited.

Great news Mike. Is this Atlassian's first acquisition? Are you planning more?

And big kev's dead mike...

Well, as Big Kev said. He's not getting excited about much any more.
