I got back to Sydney on Friday, after two very productive in the SF office and a few fabulous events, including...
The SF-Melbourne Cup at 21st Amendment with most of the Atlassian SF crew and a handful of Aussies (these people can all be added to my Startup Growth In Pictures post).
Interesting to note that although early it was mostly SFers, by the end all that were left were Aussies. The Aussies (a little inebriated but hey) then proceeded to play a night time pick-up game of AFL back and forth across 2nd street.
Web 2.0 was one of those conferences that people either loved or hated, depending on what they were there for. If you were there to meet cool new startups, there weren't that many. If you were there to see industry leaders speak and network, it was fabulous.
All things told, I thought it was good. I made a few new contacts, met a whole handful of existing (happy!) customers and even sold a few pieces of software.
Richard McManus (who is a Kiwi, but in true national tradition we count him as an Aussie) has written a more complete write up if you're keen to learn more.
Speaking of Richard, he partook in the now infamous game of Aussie poker at Arrington's.
I do disagree with the shark call though. When you sit down at a card table, be prepared to lose your money at all times. Oh and Cam if you can't spot the sucker at the table, it's you :)
That said, playing liar dice twice in two weeks (unconnectedly) is a bizarre coincidence, but I'm a growing fan of the game. Perhaps I'm just good at bullshit, but it's a lot of fun and a nifty way to gamble while doing tequila shots (or heaven forbid claypots).
Now your birthday is something that rolls around every year right? Well, for most people.
I almost managed to miss mine completely by flying over the international date line on the wrong day. Realising my itinerarical mistake, I brought my return flight forward one day so that I landed at 6am on the day itself (in time to make it to the office by 9!).
Still, Qantas was nice enough to honour my points upgrade so at least the trip was comfortable.
I'm now 27 for anyone interested, and for a little Aussie trivia, I share a birthday with my good mate Sol Trujillo. Hopefully a different career trajectory.
The most humourous present has to be my new "Pierce & Pierce" t-shirt. I'm not sure if it's off the rack or custom, but I look forward to a few strange looks while wearing it.
That was an awesome night, although turns out I'm not much of a cards player. Any evening which ends with "Sweet child o' mine" being sung at the top of our lungs at 4am in the morning has got to be a good one :-)
happy b-day Mike! If Web 2.0 was anything like Office 2.0 then it was all about the people you met and had zero to do with the conference agenda itself.
btw, what's the Aussie tequila of choice? You haven't lived till you' ve tried Oro Azul, Corralejo and Casa Noble.

Good that the Arrington ranch is not in Texas:

Happy Birthday Mike - I guess 'Birthday Week' is more applicable to you than me, however I love to drag on my bday for as long as I possibly can.
When do you and Scott actually arrive in London?
Hepby Birthday mate. Go the Scorpios. Have you ever been to the Scorpio party. Sheesh!!
I play cards and dice like I play pool. Very good between 2 and 5 beers. Very badly after that. That's my excuse for going all in when I had a pair of 8's and $40 up my sleeve......... Oh well.
Great fun.
