City To Surf / 2003 Aug 11

I ran the City To Surf yesterday - wow. It's an annual 14km run around some of Sydney's most picturesque parts, from the City to Bondi Beach.

I'm not sure what my official time was yet, but I think it was around 81 minutes, which beat my goal of 90 minutes. I've never run it before, but next year I'm going for 75 mins.

It was a fantastic event, whether you were a 'serious runner' out the front, or a guy dressed in a Gorilla suit pushing his baby in a stroller out the back. All 60,000 odd runners had a great time - not to mention the 100,000 odd people reportedly at Bondi to celebrate as the runners came in (the numbers show you there are a lot more lazy bastards than fit ones ;)).

Today? I'm feeling like crap - very achy, but satisfied. Finishing was a massive buzz, but I never knew Campbell Parade was so damned long!

One of my good mate's brother had a camera, and saw me just after I'd finished (he was running past), so here's a happy snap from his photos page of me celebrating after the race (with my free newspaper):

As you can see I was running for the Atlassian running team (team size: 1 - next year it will be bigger!). For those who are wondering what the JIRA t-shirts look like on the back, here's another happy snap:

Hey, Mike, didn't know you were a runner.

Congratulations!

Hey there Mike. Congratulations! I once ran the City-to-Surf in Perth (it's only 12km) so I can appreciate the effort required. A friend once said to me "Running is just like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer - it feels really good when you stop!" Take care.

That beach looks beautiful. I am in Florida nice beaches but no waves until the hurricanes get here :-(

Hi Mike
I was wondering if we could chat about this event and what it was like to take part?
I am working on a presentation for Greenpeace, with a view to them taking part in the event and some inside info/ background would be great.
Let know if you would be amenable.
Happy New Year
Cheers Holly
