No more blank squares / 2006 Oct 23

I'm pleased to announce a minor milestone in my life.

I've been doing the crossword (quick one) in the Sydney Morning Herald for about a year on and off. Despite having come close on a few occasions (one or two answers left), I've never completed it unaided (ie with nothing but brain and pen) before... until today!

Yes, that's right - with the final slotting of "sachets" into "foolish" and "idea" (how's that for irony?), there are no blank squares left. It's done. Monday is conquered.

Next goal? Another one. Perhaps not a Monday (I got all but 1 on Friday, and all but 2 on the weekend), perhaps a whole week of solutions - oh, and I've been getting into the NYT since I saw Wordplay on the plane to London - so let's put down solving that too.

The NYT is a little harder, and altogether quite different (many more, shorter words than the SMH).

(And if things could be more poignant - today's newspaper is printed on pink paper because it's "Pink Ribbon Day": http://www.pinkribbonday.com.au, so I supported my favourite charity just by buying it - my Mum had breast cancer but she's doing really well now.)

How about the cryptic? I feel happy if I can get more than one per day in that.

Must be nice having enough time to do a crossword puzzle to start your day. ;-)
