Whither wiki.com? / 2007 Jan 02

Someone pointed out to me over the weekend that wiki.com now redirects to wikia rather than any MindTouch powered service.

With skeptics saying that he’ll back out of the deal through a contract clause or that the purchase is a huge sign of a bubble...

After the huge fanfare about it's purchase for $3m and subsequent deal (see TechCrunch coverage), has Marshall's prediction come true?

Assuming the domain hasn't been hijacked, did Mr Gotts not pay up? Was the traffic coming to the site just not worth the $3m price? Did Wikia bid more for the rights? Time will tell.

I was wondering about this, too, as I have a wiki.com wiki. I hope someone can shed some light on what happened here...

The media is missing the story; who knows how many wikis are scheduled to disappear in a matter of hours!

Wikia apparently knows nothing about what Gotts is doing according to executives at Wikia. It looks like Gotts could never get the new and improved wiki software up and running and this Winter apparently lost MindTouch's support.

In the meantime Gotts made the following statement today (1/15/07):

All wikis will be removed in the next 72 hours.
We are sorry to say that this did not work out.
Kind regards,
John

Here's the very nice e-mail I received in response to my slightly panicky message to MindTouch (the software maker behind www.wiki.com), for lack of any other e-mail address at which to unburden my soul:

Have no fear, you will be taken of. We have
sent the following message to the approximately 550 active sites on wiki.com. If you did not receive it but want to be included in future support, please register your email mentioned in the message. Thank you.

Dear Wiki.com User:

As some of you may have heard from the grapevine, Wiki.com is shutting down
by January 25th, 2007. But have no worries: your content is safe and you
will be able to continue as before without a hitch. MindTouch and John
Gotts, the owner of Wiki.com, have reached an agreement to transfer all wiki
sites and accounts to MindTouch. We have already begun the backup and
provisioning processes to effect a seamless migration to our hosting
facilities, which will occur over the next few days. The agreement does not
include keeping the domain name; MindTouch is only taking over the wiki
sites and their accounts.

We agreed to take over on such short notice because our technology powered
the site from the beginning, our user interface is very intuitive and easy,
and we are intimately familiar with the backend operations of the site.
That's why we are confident we can restore the site and continue bringing
improvements to it. Our immediate concern is preserving what you have
created. We will be releasing details shortly on what new domain name will
be used, and what features and services will be provided. We will take care
of you.

If you have any concerns, ideas and suggestions, please send them to:
wikisupport@mindtouch.com

Thank you for your understanding,

Steve G. Bjorg
Cofounder and CTO
MindTouch, Inc.
