Those who know me know I'm a huge coffee fan. I'm also a big technology buff and I travel a lot, so this article in the SF Gate is right up my alley.
A new breed of worker, fueled by caffeine and using the tools of modern technology, is flourishing in the coffeehouses of San Francisco. Roaming from cafe to cafe and borrowing a name from the nomadic Arabs who wandered freely in the desert, they've come to be known as "bedouins."
Most amusingly it seems, working virtually at your local coffee show can yield employees - perhaps that's what I should do to fix my hiring problems?
The founders of Web video startup Dovetail Television were meeting there one day, griping as usual about how hard it was to find talented programmers. "I'm looking around and there's gotta be 50 people with laptops," said Brett Levine, 31, a co-founder and the company's lead programmer. "I got on a chair and yelled, 'Hey, are there any ActionScript programmers in the room?' People at the counter looked at me glaringly, but a couple of people looked around and raised their hand."
Now there's been articles before about paying for lattes as rent for a startup before, for example Monster Fueled by Caffeine in Wired about the starting of Delicious Monster at Zoka's in Seattle.
We pay our rent by buying coffee...
The question for me is always - how much coffee would you realistically need to buy in order to be a "good caffeine bedouin"? 1 coffee an hour? The article quotes all sorts of costs, but off the top of my head I'd guesstimate if you spend $30 a day on coffee and food, you should be able to get a seat... right?
At Terra-Bite in Seattle you can spend a lot less:
